- 06Assumption Cathedral
Assumption Cathedral and its slender bell tower, resembling a candle, can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin on Universitetskaya, 11 is the oldest Orthodox church in Kharkov. The little church was built in 1658, but soon the wooden structure decayed, and a stone cathedral was built, which has not survived until today. A modern baroque temple with elements of folk architecture was built in 1777, and completed in 1783. The cathedral's decoration is considered to be the Alexander Bell Tower with a height of 89.5 m. For almost a century and a half, it remained the tallest building in the city. After restoration from 1980 to 2016, the House of Organ and Chamber Music was located in the cathedral. Today, the church was returned to believers, and a new organ hall was opened in the Kharkiv Philharmonic at ul. Rymarskaya 21.
